ABOUT THE GREEN POWER INITIATIVE: Congressman Al Green (D-Houston; 9th Cong Dist) is a proud alumnus of Thurgood Marshall School of Law who after graduation became a partner in a small general services law firm. His partners, also recent TMSL graduates, felt competent in law but unprepared to conduct the business of legal practice. Looking back on those years, the congressman realized how beneficial it would have been to have had the entrepreneurial exposure that he needed for success. This is the genesis of the green power initiative; a comprehensive program designed to expose and enhance the entrepreneurial development of our future lawyers, pharmacists and other professionals.  This comprehensive program includes three components: (1) a session for entering Thurgood Marshall School of Law students during the Orientation week at TMSL, geared to getting students to begin thinking of best practices for financial well-being and literacy. The program also introduces students to entrepreneurial mentorships and assistance offered by nationally renowned business advisers; (2) a guest lecture series in which professional business and financial advisers lecture TMSL students on various topics including business plans, creditworthiness, enhancing marketability and much more; (3) an annual business support symposium targeting an audience of 300 persons who are in business or who desire to go into business and will feature opportunities for one-on-one counseling as well as multiple seminar tracks addressing issues related to financial stability and wellness.

THURGOOD MARSHALL SCHOOL OF LAW-STUDENT ORIENTATION

Each year the GPI committee participates in the 1L student orientation on the campus of Thurgood Marshall School of Law. This year we focused on the topic of Introduction to Financial Management During Law School in which we were in contact with Jed Molleston, Executive Director State Bar of Texas Ethics Commission-Houston. Mr. Molleston touched on bar review course costs; bar examination application-review of credit; wage garnishing for student loans and overdue child support; and license suspension for default on student loans.  We provided the students with a small packet of information called the Financial Opportunities Resource Guide to aide them with financial questions.  To view the full informational packet of helpful financial information for law students please CLICK HERE.
