In 1948, Professor Earl Carl became a founding faculty member of the law school at Texas Southern University, now known as Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

Professor Carl, blind since 16 years of age, was not deterred by this challenge. He simply met it. His strength and intellect are the foundation of the Earl Carl Institute.

Professor Carl was committed to the law school and its students throughout his tenure; a commitment that continued after he retired in 1987. When asked why he stayed so long amidst numerous offers to go elsewhere, he said, "This is not just a job for me. It is my life. I would not go elsewhere."

Professor Carl's professional accomplishments were often recognized by academic and community organizations. The TSU Board of Regents honored Professor Carl as Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Professor.

Professor Carl received his undergraduate degree from Fisk University and his juris doctorate and Masters of Laws degrees from Yale University .

This Institute is proud to bear the name of such a remarkable man and legal scholar.
